"I am not a metal head, but I bought the whole course, and it was well worth the money. It really will jump start your playing and get you to an advanced intermediate level in about 6 months. It also will give you a fairly good understanding of theory. Not bad for 6 months. However, I have to say, that it is geared to metal/hard rock, so some of the examples and techniques will not apply if you aren't into those styles."

If you are primarily interested in playing rock and metal guitar, Doug Marks' Metal Method seems like a good alternative to Learn and Master Guitar. If you search for this course online, you only find positive reviews (and that includes the guitar forums with more credible and honest reviews). The only complaint you sometimes hear, is that it focuses primarily on rock and metal and doesn't include many other styles. But that is to be expected if the name of the course is Metal Method.
His company has been a successful guitar instruction company for more than twenty-five years. The company was founded in the early 80's. What was considered metal back then is classic rock today.
The following stages are included with the complete basic course:
- Stage One - Introduction. Equipment, tuning, basic techniques, reading music, learning the notes on the guitar, chords, and more.
- Stage Two - More basics. Open chords, bar chords, power chords, strumming patterns, notes on the fretboard, open D tuning, pentatonic minor scale, demonstration of electric guitar effects, and more.
- Stage Three - Techniques and rock scale patterns for soloing. Scales and soloing, techniques, reading notation and symbols, learn a complete solo with rhythm parts, and more.
- Stage Four - Learn how to play a challenging solo. Learn a complete solo, minor pentatonic to major pentatonic, phrasing, expressive techniques, natural minor scale, two handed tapping techniques, string muting, harmonics, and more.
- Stage Five - Focuses on improvisation. Special techniques, two solos and a blues jam, new chords, and more.
- Stage Six - Modal theory and scales for rock guitar. The power of music theory, principles of tonality, modal theory, and harmony.
There are additional files included for those who have a computer with a DVD drive. These files include a printable form of tablature, animated play along tab, and a complete chapter list. This is bonus material, so even if you don't have a computer this isn't necessary to master these lessons.
